Barrow hill is open to the public from 10:00 to 16:00 on a saturday and sunday. The best time to visit is after 10:30 on a saturday morning due to the deltic shed being open. You may want to check the calendar on the DPS website, as the shed may sometimes be closed. Inside the roundhouse are various locomotives, some are finished and are very proudly on display in their shining fresh coat of paint, whereas others are undergoing restoration. There are a few steam engines aswell as the diesel and electric. In the yard, one side contains a huge group of locos which would need a lot of work if they were to return to the mainline, whereas the other side contains everything that is in good condition. The AC locomotive group keep all of their locos there, including 89001 at the very front of the long line of good locos. Inside the deltic shed are currently four deltics (12/03/05). The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry is stored on behalf of the NRM, with no current intention of restoration, Royal Highland Fusilier stands in working order, with just a coat of paint required. Tulyar is undergoing overhaul, with the intention of it returning to mainline standards, and Royal Scots Grey is totally in pieces, with an empty shell and its innards on the floor. Entrance to the roundhouse and deltic shed are by donation. There is a line next to the yard where freightliner 66s can be seen with coal.

I was there for the 'First Born' gala. I was very impressed with the withdrawn locos on hand. You can have a free wander around to see these old girls in a bad state. There is ample parking facilities and very easy to find. Well worth a visit. I have uploaded some photos from Barrow Hill here

The roundhouse is very impresive but sadly half of it was restricted on the 'first born' gala weekend. A dozen or so stalls selling railway items but I would rather it had been fully open to the public.
