Parking here is not bad but not cheap either at the station. Spotters welcome on station everyone friendly especially the local lads who say platform 4/5 is the best. I stayed on platform 3 which is near the toilets and spotted most things load of freight on this Thursday so really need to be on 4 so you can see all units and locos. Restaurant has now closed on platform 1 which was cheap so chippy or supermarket for food. Great day out and thanks to the locals making our stay more enjoyable with their local knowledge.

I have to agree about the weather at Nuneaton station.
Its ok there when Its warm but when there is a cold wind blowing you cant seem to escape it anywhere on the station.
Aside from that minor problem its not a bad place for the enthusiast.
Ok photography can be a problem but as has been said its the same with any island platformed station.
Facilities include toilets on platform 1 only which are not the best in the world but hey as you are only in there for a minute or two thats not really a problem and they do seem to stay unlocked till late-ish.
There is a privately owned cafe also on platform 1 which does the usual refreshments and is also well stocked with magazines or there is Asda.
Parking is now £4.50 on site or £3.00 all day at Dunnelm but do arrive early, or there is Asda which is a 2 min walk but this gets busy.
I usually use the south end of platform 2 as during the morning/evening time this is where most freight is pathed but the sun can be a problem 1st thing in the morning.
Its usually busy between 7 & 9.30 in the morning and from around 4pm in the evening.
As for services trains to London/Liverpool are every hour or Manchester (if you change at Stafford).Coventry every hr and around every 25 mins to Birmingham/Leicester.

People say that the WCML is dull but even on quiet days there is always something interesting about.
Motive power to be seen at the station normally are classes 57/60/66/90/92/153/156/158/170 and occasional 37/67/86/87/HST.
There is usually a couple of track machines stabled at the north end of platform 1.

Nuneaton station i must admit is cold but then again it can be hot aswell so its not that bad. its good for the weather on the top end of 4/5 apart from if its raining because there is no roof up there the staion is usually full of spotters on the bottom of plat 1
and either end of 3/2 4/5 so you are never on your own.

The local area is nice and full of eating establishment and the town never more than a 5 min walk away its in a good area the local chippey is Waleses just a minute walk away.

The station parking in the area is not the easyist or cheapist but if you know your local info you'll know where to go after a few visits and a chat with the locals like me.

For more info please visit my web site on nuneaton www.freewebs.com/railwayman2005 its got all the info of the area, parking, dinning and what to do and how to get there.

Generally, I would like to agree with Marcus' review. One or two extra points though.

Nuneaton is probably the most desolate station in Britain. I've never been there when it's been warm - the wind whips through the paltforms with a vengeance.

Layout is typical WCML, consisting of island platforms which always makes photography tricky. The sun is on the Down side usually except early in the morning, when it's a real sod! North end of Platform 2/3 is good for Up traffic but pretty ropey for Down whilst the south end of 2/3 is okay for both directions as there is the remains of a bay on 3 which allows good shots of the Down Main. You lose whatever is on the Up Slow though and the Down Slow and Down Brum are pretty awful. The roadbridge gets in the way as well. Inside the station canopies, it is pretty gloomy all day and the high line speed on the Main does not help much.

Traffic is pretty variable too. It seems a strange thing to say of the WCML but there are days when there seems to be nothing much about at all.

I never take a pack-up - Asda is 2 minutes walk across the car park and the meals are excellent and cheap - chicken and chips for under 4 quid! - well recommended.

Plenty of activity is to be found at Nuneaton! A variety of traffic as the WCML, Leicester, Coventry and Birmingham Lines all converge at this important junction, which makes for an interesting day's spotting.

The best photographic points are the North end of Platform 4 & 3, South end of 4, 2 & 3 and also occasionally on Platform 1.

Parking on the station grounds is £3 all day (but get there before the commuters do! - which means 7:15am at the latest!!!) Or ample parking for about £1.50-£2.00 can be found at the Dunelm car park. A good cafe is on Platform 1, or alternatively very good food can be sourced from Asda about 2 minutes walk from the station!

Toilets are available from 5am until about 10:30pm. Not nice but it is a station after all and we don't go to spot toilets do we!!!

Hope you enjoy our visit/day trip to Nuneaton, hope this is of some help to you all.
