Peterborough basicly has the same freight as March just take away the EWS wakefield-wembly intermodal and plasmors. In reply to 31B March is a great station and with the Ipswich tunnel closure coming up next week will make a change from my usual haunts of Peterborough. The only thing I dont like at PB is the OHC posts get in the way alot but I've still managed to get some good shots there. Check my website out at

As a March resident, I would like to write in favour of March. The recent revival of Whitemoor Yard has contributed a great deal to traffic in this area. 89104 (D9504, Class 14) is the permanent Whitemoor pilot and easily visible from Norwood Bridge. There are several trains, mainly GBRf 66's, into and out of Whitemoor every weekday. The Yard is scheduled to open in April with possibly as many as 90 extra trains per week on the cards. Freight trains are increasingly frequent. On a good day, particularly a Wednesday, as many as 15 might be seen in a day, excluding repeats, between 0900 and 1700. 2 GBRf liners, 1 Freightliner, 1/2 sand trains, 3/4 LaFarge trains plus a number of conditionals. All are block trains except the Tue/Fri Grant Rail pick-up which runs to March Down Yard, where 08754 is based as Yard Pilot.
Good photographic points are to be found at Norwood Bridge (for Whitemoor Yard), March West Footbridge (about 400 yards west of station), the March - Guyhirn Main Road Flyover (about 1 mile west of station), Station LC (westbound only). Many more outside of town. There are toilets and a newspaper shop on the station, chippie 150 yards away. A far superior location to Peterborough. I have yet to see a really good photograph taken there! Anyone interested in a visit, email me for more info.

March used to be a thriving centre for freight with a depot and large yard at Whitemoor close by. How things change.
The depot and yard are long gone and any locos are now stabled by the signal box east of the station in loop lines.
The station is rather run down but a level crossing at the east end adds interest for photos.
There are no facilities at the station but shops are nearby and a pub is next to the station.
Units from Central and Anglia form the passenger trains many of which dont stop whilst freight is scarce but good photos can be got of what runs.
My opinion : May as well go to Peterboro instead !
