Visited Doncaster on 17/04/2015. There was lots of Variety with class 47,67,90,66 and lots of different units.
There is lifts to every platform, I found that platform 4 was the best for seeing must things but you do need to be at both ends if you want to see everything. there are refreshments on all platforms with a massive shopping centre connected to the station by way of an escalator.

I know that loads of spotters go to Doncaster so what I'm putting probably isn't news to most of you but just wanted to write something because I've just started going to "Donny" after several years away from spotting. I used to visit Donny in late 1980s/early 1990s and always loved it....hadn't been since until Jan.2007 and have now done 4 visits since then and am glad to say that it remains a quality location.

ECML obviously busy with 91s and HSTs but with all the local traffic as well, it makes for a very busy station. Added to this are the freights - every time I've been its been pretty busy except for a lull at lunchtime. Also, there's always Wabtec to spring a surprise on you - got 159105 straight out of paint shed and off down south a few months back, which was pretty good.

On a usual day it seems to be that you'll probably get 08/43/60/66 (660/1/2/5/6/7)/67/91 loco-wise and units: 153/156/158/185/220/221/222/321. Thats not including whatever is stabled in station yard /Wabtec and if its your bag there's often quite a bit of departmental stuff around too.

Well worth a visit!

The multi-storie car park is now open so if you go thru the new shopping mall as told by Trebore and go past the food stalls to the end and take the lift to the top floor you get a good view into the Wabtec Depot Bino's needed

There is now some more eating places nearer to doncaster station as the new bus interchange as just opened, to visit these places just go out of the main entrance at doncaster station turn left walk straight to some glass double doors up the moving staircase and bingo you are above the new bus interchange, where you will see the new KFC and other eating places plus you will also get straight into the frenchgate centre where there is the sandwhich shops like greggs and so on and if you want a cappucino or any other hot drink then you have got cafe nero's just outside the frenchgate centre or if you fancy a beer at lunch time then you have got the tut&shive pub near the frenchgate.

At doncaster you get lots of units, HST's, 91's, 66's,67's,60's and the odd 37.The best platform is platform 3a because you can get addtional freight trains with binoculars going on the freight line towords sheffield. Friday's are usually the busiest days but on Saturday's you do usually see convoys of 2,3,4 or even 5 loco's usually 60's & 66's.

If you are in car there is a car park (signposted for "railway station long stay") at the south end of the station. You seem to be taken a long way round to get there on the main road but you get a good vantage point and can get any freight etc that misses the station and heads up towards Sheffield. I parked there and a 10 min walk to the station but noticed a couple of guys just stay in their car where it was warmer!! You can find something to eat between there and the station.

Doncaster is dominated by GNER with Virgin and Northern Spirit making up the passenger trains. There is a fair amount of freight passing through the station during the day making Doncaster well worth a visit. Facilities on the platforms are good and good photos can be got. Outside the station there is a chip shop and McDonalds fairly near along with town centre cafes. Anglia 170s operate the Hull Trains services and Central operate an infrequent service.
The Wabtec works yard can be part seen from the north end of platform 8.
The best days to visit are Wednesday - Friday but try to avoid Mondays and Tuesdays
