London Victoria consists of a remarkable 19 platforms, all of which have had ticket barriers installed on them (except platforms of the Gatwick Express). In the 1980's platforms 10 to 19 (known as the 'Brighton side') had a large shopping centre built overhead and now they are permanently lit. The only major interest in 'Brighton side' traffic is that of the Gatwick Express 'old stock' - a Class 73 electro-diesel, Mk 2 air-conditioned stock and a Class 489 GLV trailing. The original concourse and hotel frontage fortunately survive. Platforms 1 to 9 (known as the 'Chatham side') retain their double-span arched overall roof and serve more interesting traffic, namely steam-hauled specials and the Orient Express. In keeping with the surviving arched overall roofs, the street frontage of the 'Chatham side' has been retained and restored, making the station a worthy London terminus. A bus station and taxi ramp are located at the station's entrance, but standard car parking is non-existent, hence it is best to travel to the station by train.
Parking not good, eating very good, viewing ok if ticket barriers not in use or you have a ticket to travel.
