The situation at Kingmoor has changed since the last review in 2008. The Carlisle relief road now runs over the bridge at the South end of Kingmoor Yard, this is an extremely busy road, better to either walk or drive about 600yards along the side road towards Rockliffe on the West side of the WCML, There is a small area of waste ground linked to the path for the EWS yard,

From here you can clearly see the recessed North bound trains, mostly empty coal waiting their turn to head for Scotland, china clay crew change and empty log train before going into the Yard. To see other movements in the yard you will need binoculars.

The MOD branch referred to in the last review infact now has a cement working into the Lafarge railhead on the Kingstown Industrial Estate.

Current locos regularly seen are as follows.

EWS 08/66/92
Freightliner 66 / 86 /90
DRS 20/37/47/57
Colas 66
Occasionally GBRF 66

Many will know the mecca that carlisle is for loco and D/EMU spotters alike but Knigmoor yard is sometime overlooked.

The southern end has the DRS depot with a good amount of classes 20/47/37/57/66 stabled most are visible from the overbridge to the south of the station and the waste ground (formally kingmoor steam shed) on the otherside of the WCML. Regular light moves to/from Crewe and Sellifeild can make good photo potential as well as crew chages on DRS intermodal traffic (3 each way in daylight being normal). Neuc wagons are sometimes stabled at the depot if your missing a couple as are the DRS/MOD sercuity coaches (converted MK2s).

The next bridge up the line gives a view of the MOD branch and the southern end of kingmoor yard with normal locos being EWS classes 08/60/66/67/90/92 and freightliner 66s.
During Settle Carlisle closures GDRf class 66sw also use the yard to run round diverted newbiggin-drax gypsum workings. Binoculars will be needed for this location for locos not leaving or arriving at the yard. Engineers stock and enterprise/MOD trains are the most common with engineering machines also stored in the yard.

The northern end of Kingmoor on the crossing on the A74(M) access road is the best close place for arrivals/departures at the north end of the arrivals line.

Passing traffic north of carlisle includes:
Passenger:
First Scotrail/SCPTE class 156's
Virgin classes 220/221/390 and the odd 57 (ONE BOOKED WORKING IN EACH DIRECTION ON WOOD TRAINS FOR COLAS)
Trans Pennine express class 185's
Freight:
Freightliner: classes 66/86/90
EWS: 60/66/90/92
DRS: 37/47/57/66

Class 325 mail EMUs also pass in the evening

South of Carlisle Upperby Yard is now used only for wagon storage with the last loco to leave after stabling being an EWS class 47 in early 2005.

I will not go into the station area as this has been covered by others but heres a list of classes I have seen there that are still mainline registered

08/20/33(WCRC light engines normally)/37/47/57/60/66/67 (railtours mostr common work)/86/90/92/142/153/156/158/185/220/221/390

Steam and diesel charters are common turning up interesting traction on some occations classes 37/4/40/45/50/52 have all visited within the past 2 years although WCRC's all conquering class 47s are the most common tour locos being based at Carnforth light and empty stock move from this company are also common, especially during the royal scotsman season.

Food avalible daytimes till 21:00 on the station although I recomend the fish and chip shop across the station forcort near the bus stops. Nearest food avalible to kingmoor is the little chef on the side of the A74m
