As an alternative to March or the awful Peterborough, Whittlesey (or Whittlesea as the Railway have it) is recommended.

Access is easy. Regular Anglia services stop there two hourly through the day plus a number of Central services too. By road, it's easy to find from Peterborough or March although the station is a bit remote but well signed from the town.

The station itself is staggered platforms, quite short, with a level crossing, hand operated gates, right off the end of the Down platform. Facilities are very basic.

The signalbox, just east of the station on the Down side, controls a nice outfit of semaphore signals, only distants being lights.

A nice alternative to the station is Hart's Drove, accessible by going towards the town and taking the first left, a narrow lane, and following it to the level crossing, public-operated gates with light controls. There is hardly any traffic except for pedestrians so you won't be much disturbed. The Up Outer Home and Distant are right by the crossing and, from the west, the line comes in on a sharp curve, offering some nice photo views. You are only yards from the sewage works though!

Rail traffic is fairly brisk with up to 15 freights on a good day between about 0900 and 1800, especially a Wednesday, augmented now by the quite heavy traffic to and from the new Whitemoor Yard. If you need GBRf 66's, then this is a good place to be!

Given the relative paucity of good photo spots in the Fens, then Whittlesey is well worth a look.
