Place to stay:
There is now a Travelodge outside the station which you can`t miss.
Food Drink:
Behind the Travelodge you have the The Queen's Hotel (Wetherspoons) which also has Sky sports & if you turn left outside the station & take your next right there is The John Wallace Linton (Wetherspoons) better for food than the Queens,i have never really ventured anywhere further as the place is very run down in my opinion (no offence to anyone that lives there) & both pubs are next to the station which is easy to pop back for the odd freight.
The station is a barriered station until about 2000,it is very sporadic for freight during the day but is fairly busy from 1600 onwards,it is better on a Tuesday or Thursday i think.
Please note car parking at Railway station is now £5.00 per day
Very busy and popular spot for like minded enthusiasts. All London - Cardiff/Swansea mainline trains, plus a fair amount of freight passing through, including otherwise unusual workings of class 09 etc. (See my photographs). Stabling point at west end of station, need binoculars, or walk around to the station car park where legal access to sightings of most stabled loco's is possible. WH Smiths, and station cafe selling hot and cold sandwiches, drinks, etc. Full toilet facilities. Also town centre literally across the road with access to various fast food and other eating places. NCP car park across road from station...£2.70 up to 4 hours, £4.20 thereafter; closed Sundays, closes 9 pm other days, and they lock the doors at 9 pm. Station car park, with walk way access to platforms, £4.20 ANY time period, open 24 hours (I think). Best road access from jct 26 of M4, about 5 mins from this junction.
