I was walking round Central yesterday, and a "First" gate-staff employee asked me if I wanted to go on to the platform and have a walk round. So a friendly place too!
Excellent station for units, you will see class 156/221/314/318/334/390/91.
The end of platform 11 is best for viewing as all movements can be seen from here.
Plenty of shops and a chippy just outside the station, also worth going down to the low level station where you will get 318/334 which bypass the main station.
There are no freight movements at this station
Glasgow Central is a good place for Scottish Units with most trains to Southern Glasgow leaving from here.
The best platform for photography is platform 11 which gives you a good view of all trains arriving and departing.
In terms of amenities there are loads of shops on the concourse and a Yates Wine Lodge which you can sit in and get a good view of platforms 1-6.
Outside the station is a fish and chip shop, Greggs sandwich shop and Safeway supermarket. You can walk a short distance to Queen Street and it is well signposted.
At Glasgow central you will see 156/220/221/314/318/334/390/91. HST's, and 87 are rare now. Also the Caladonion sleeper comes here which is class 90 hauled. I usually get boerd here after an hour but you do get a lot of sightings in this time.
