ECML station served by East Coast, Cross Country, Transpennine Express and Northern Rail.
Passenger class 91, 220/1, HST, 185,.
All of the big four FOC's use 66's on freight. A couple of class 60 workings daily on the Jarrow Oil tanks!

Network Rail measurement train passes alternate Mondays and saturdays.
All ECML freight has to pass through Durham station on one of it 3 lines!

Signposted from A1M/A690 but better by train. Tickets needed to get onto platforms, south end overlooks the superb viaduct but staff get nervous if you get too close - understandably, since there is a history of suicides off it!

Cafe facilities are of the caravan/machine type but its a friendly well-maintained station which should pose no security worries.
(Sheddy reported in Feb 2006 that you won't get in without a ticket, so it may not seem as friendly as it used too!)

If you ask in the ticket office on the south side for a platform ticket they just tell you to go straight on in, and that they haven't issued a valid platform ticket in years!

If staff are at the gates, just say you are meeting someone off a train! Or play it safe and tell the truth!
It has been revamped with an interear, eating area, and classy waiting rooms, a WH Smith is also on the station, with an array of books, the veiw facing south over the viaduct is supurb, and shots (in the right light) can be taken in either direction!
