Views of the north and south ends of the depot can be obtained from Kingmoor Sidings Nature Reserve. This is an area of woodland which has grown up on the site of the old steam shed and is adjacent to the DRS depot on the opposite side of the main line. Foliage makes identifying some trains, such as Voyagers, passing on the main line difficult, but with the aid of binoculars most of the locos outside of the depot can be seen. There are some gaps in the growth where it is possible to stand by the fence.
The pathways are surfaced but puddles develop in wet weather. Stout shoes or wellingtons are not essential, but are an advantage.
To get there leave Carlisle City Centre on the northbound A7, bear left into Etterby Street, continue along Etterby Scaur and turn left into Etterby Road at the Redfern Inn. Immediately before the bridge over the main line turn right into Balmoral Court. There is a small parking area, with a swing-gate for access to the reserve, on the left at the far end of the lane.
Stagecoach bus service 76 to St Anns Hill can be caught from English Street. Go straight out of the station main entrance to the traffic lights. On reaching the lights turn left, cross the road and follow the pavement through the archway to the second bus shelter thereafter. Alight at the Redfern Inn and walk along Etterby Road and Balmoral Court as detailed above. On return alight from bus at The Crescent, which is on the opposite side of the traffic lights to the station. Fare is £1.30 single. Returns not available. Buses run every 15 minutes during the day, Monday to Saturday, until about 6:00pm.
Details and directions can also be found in the "Nature Reserves in Cumbria" leaflet in which it is entry number 11.
Please do not break down or damage any trees or bushes in an attempt to improve views of the depot.
