Update on building / rebuilding works currently going on in and around Loughborough station:
Platforms extended to the north to accommodate 10-car trains (2 x Class 222's), new lifts / 'roofed' footbridge now installed, large development (mainly housing) constructed on site of old sidings, new north / south access road parallel to main line on 'town' side of station open, car parking area at station much improved and enlarged, widened section of main road (A60) passing station now open.
Tiny refreshment room / newspaper shop on Platform 1 has been upgraded & they do a very good 'Hot Chocolate'!
Not much change in services passing through station: all the MML St Pancras stuff that doesn't peel off at Kettering for Corby, and hourly Leic / Lincoln locals (which are useful to use because they pass Lafarge Stone Depot slowly as they need to stop at the local station - Barrow-upon-Soar) + various freight flows.
I would just like to add an extra comment to this review. Don't go under the road bridge to the south platform end, where you would think the best photos may be taken. The staff seem to wait for you to do just this, then take great delight in ejecting you from the station. However, they don't seem to bother you if you stay at the north end of the station.
A nice little station with a good car park and buffet/shop on the platform. It is served by Midland Main Line HST/170s along with Central Trains and freight passes through on the goods lines but can be clearly seen and photos are easy to get. It allows easy access to Leicester/Derby and Nottingham by frequent train service.
