Salisbury station is a mix of fine railway architecture and interesting train movements. It consists of three through platforms and one bay platform, numbered 2-5 (platform 1 is no longer used for boarding trains and has given way to the parking of motorcycles). The platforms are adjacent to South West Trains' main diesel multiple unit depot. A selection of the passenger train classes which use the station are as follows: Class 153, 158, 159 and 170. Freight trains pass through the station frequently, usually headed by EWS Class 66 diesel locomotives, or Foster Yeoman Class 59's. The former Great Western Railway terminus station still exists and is now in use as a car rental establishment - the depot occupies the former site of the station's platforms. To the west of the station is the train washing facility and the diverging routes to Yeovil and Westbury. To put the 'icing on the cake' in terms of traffic variety, steam specials are a regular occurrence at the station, these of which stop for water. Car Parking is available at the station, but has been optimised for train travellers, thus only an expensive day ticket can be purchased. Car parking is plentiful in the town centre.
