Hest Bank is situated on the West Coast Main Line north of Lancaster. Over looking Morecambe bay and on to the Lake District. A manned level crossing is here so you know when anything is coming.
Trains past are mainly Virgin units but there are also a fair number of Transpennine and Northern units as well. The usual northern, west coast freight, such as class 92's and 66's on coal and freightliners all pass here as well DRS on nuclear flasks. Freight does pick up a lot more in the evening.
A small cafe is also selling teas, burgers etc. There is a toilet in the cafe but if you prefer the outside loo then you can try one of the worst toilets in the country 100 metres away. If you suffer from arachniphobia use the cafe.
Realistically the only way to get here is by car on the main road out of Morecambe. Buses can be caught from Morecambe, Lancaster or Carnforth but trust me you dont want to be stood out on Morecambe bay when its raining and windy, which is most of the time.
If camping is your thing there are several camp sites in the area. The best to view the line is Sandside in Bolton le Sands 1 mile up the road from Hest Bank.
