On the North Wales Coast line, passenger trains are worked by Virgin West coast and Arriva Trains Wales. Arriva use mainly 175s on the trains to Llandudno and Holyhead with a few 150/153/158s, and 142s/50X units can be seen at Chester on locals. Arriva also runs a Class 47-hauled diagram from Manchester-Holyhead. The 47 departs Piccadilly at 10:00 and 17:17.
Virgin West Coast are currently using Class 47's on the Holyhead-London Euston trains (with a Class 87 taking over from Crewe-South) although from 26th September this is to go over to Voyager operation. A Pendolino, dragged by a 57 between Crewe & Holyhead, will cover two of the diagrams. Current 47- hauled departures ex-Crewe for Holyhead are 10:49, 19:43, 21:27 and arrivals at Crewe ex-Holyhead are at 07:35, 11:28 and 15:32. This this will change by Sept 26th however
Freight traffic is very few & far between, but suprisingly features 3 freight companies - DRS, Freightliner and EWS.
EWS's only regular train is the Scunthorpe-Mostyn steel train which runs when required. Always a 66 to Mostyn sidings, then an industrial shunter forwards to take the steel into the docks area. Runs when required.
EWS also run the occasional ballast working to Penmaenmawr. Again, usually a 66.
Freightliner Heavy Haul run one ballast train to Penmaenmawr every day, again always a 66 [although a 47 has worked it once! That is the ONLY known time that the booked FL 66 has failed to turn up!]. DRS traffic to Valley runs Tuesdays and Fridays only, and is normally pairs of 20s, 37s or 66/4s.
