Bexley is situated upon the 'Sidcup route' of the North Kent Lines and remains as one of the route's few stations to retain its original South Eastern Railway timber building. It consists of two platforms serving the double-track line, which are connected via a subway. The ancient architecture is to some extent more interesting than the railway traction itself as the Class 465/466 EMUs monopolise services on the line. However, Bexley is situated on a route frequently used by freight trains traversing between Hither Green and Hoo Junction, which gives added interest to the area. Bexley was the scene of a freight derailment in the mid-1990s which saw the last few wagons of the train come off the rails and tumble over the viaduct which forms the threshold of the station. Car parking is available at the station, but it is far better to travel in by train.
