Please be advised that you can no longer get onto the footbridge mentioned in Martin Harrison's review. A gate has now been constructed across the top of the steps complete with a keypad lock.

In addition to the current reviews, note that the road referred to to get to the footpath is closed (July 2011) but pedestrians can still get through. The field referred to by Argyle gives a good view of the back of the depot but binos will save you a long walk as you'll see everything from the stile half-way along the depot side. Be aware that the view into the depot is restricted by a hedge at this time of year - as I found out! Also be aware of copious amounts of dog shit on the path - as I also found out!

In addition to Argyles notes,as you walk down the hill from the station, there is a high stone wall on your left. After approx 250 yards, there is a gate that takes you onto a footbridge that leads to the Depot.I was advised at the Open Day in 2008,WCRC have no objection to spotters viewing from this bridge.Have visited twice since 2008 and accessed and viewed yard from bridge without any problems..Martin Harrison

For a better view of the shed and stored locos come out of the station turn left onto Warton rd,carry on this road under the railway line till you come to a lane on you left, take this.Walk till you go under the railway again and go left straight away,up the lane. This will lead to a field which is also the other side of the shed you get a good view of everything from here, can get a bit muddy though.

Carnforth is a small but interesting station on the WCML. Carnforth originally had four platforms, because the express trains used to stop there. However they were removed a long time ago. You enter Carnforth station by the old mainline platform (it has a barrier between you and the trains) and go into a subway and onto the operational platforms. Carnforth sees a good range of traffic. Stopping traffic is 144s, 156s and 175s. I have even known an Arriva 142 to go there on a Leeds run! Express traffic is Pendolinos, Voyagers, 92s, 175s and 66s. Carnforth station is fully disabled accessible. There are no lifts, as it has ramps rather than stairs. The refreshment room used in the 1946 film Brief Encounter is open Tuesday-Saturday. There is also couple of shops on the old mainline platform where you enter the station. The station has a good (but not huge) sized car park. A good viewing position is at the south end of platform two.
