Manchester Piccadilly is perhaps one of the most exciting stations in the country. It has recently undergone a huge refurbishment programme. In the terminating platforms (platforms 1-12) you can see lots of trains, such as TP 158's, Pendolinos, MML HST's, 142's and FNW 323's. Up a travelator and down an escalator and you are on the through platforms. (Platforms 13 & 14) These platforms offer an even larger variety of trains, including Virgin Voyagers, Class 175's and central 170's. As for eating, the station offers a wide range of fast food restaurants. There is also a mini-shopping mall. If you get bored of trainspotting at the station, be sure to check out the Ian Allan transport bookshop, a very short walk out the station exit. If that isn't enough, take the escalator down to the metrolink. Longsight depot is a brief train ride out of Piccadilly, on the way to stockport. Not every train out of Piccadilly passes this, so be sure to get on a train that is for Manchester Airport, or that stops at Stockport. A good viewing position is at the end of the long platform. (It's something like plat. 5) From here, you can see the trains from the terminating platforms, and the trains from the through platforms. Unfortunately, it isn't close enough to the through platforms to get numbers. If you are ever stuck for where to go, Manchester Piccadilly will definitely satisfy you.
