This review refers to LH Group (LHG) who are currently overhauling MoD locos which have recently been added to class 01/5. LHG is located at the extreme end of Graycar Business Park, Barton Turn, which is just north of Central Rivers Depot. The site is adjacent to both the A38 road & the Burton on Trent - Tamworth line. Some locos can be seen from the train, but identification is not possible. There is a gatehouse & gatekeeper at the entrance to the business park, so entry to the park is unlikely to be permitted. There is however a public footpath which runs alongside of LHG's site.
If travelling by car, park in the lay-by on the southbound carriageway of the A38 just before the entrance to Barton Fields Garden Centre. Then walk past the garden centre entrance and continue along the verge. On reaching the business park carry on down the verge for another 50 - 100 yards and you will see a stile on your left. The footpath beyond runs back along the other side of the hedge and then alongside LHG's fence. There is usually a line of industrial shunters by the fence. On the other side of the path is a field containing, amongst other things, wheel-sets, bogie frames and sundry miscellaneous loco related items, plus a length of track possibly used for testing locos. About half way along the fence is a set of gates. If these and the workshop doors are open it is possible to see the locos inside, but only end on, making identification almost certainly impossible. The path continues alongside of the workshops and eventually reaches a footbridge over the main line.
There appeared to be only one MoD loco, unidentifiable, on site when visited in August 2005. Additionally car 977988 of unit 960301 was also present.
